About Kriya Yoga
Kriya Yoga is a very ancient, deep and advanced technique for spiritual evolution, given to us for spiritual enlightenment. Kriya works particularly on the spine and rebalancing our chakras by awakening the “sushmuna nadi” (central energetic/spiritual channel) from where the so-called Kundalini spiritual energy rises. This makes our consciousness grow, purifying what is not necessary and allowing us to easily reach superconsciousness (Samadhi - Nirvana - Enlightenment).
The teachings of Kriya Yoga were opened to many seekers of Truth since the 1800s by the great Master Lahiri Mahasaya, known as the “Father of Modern Kriya Yoga”.
The most famous and wonderful Guru-Master who came to the United States disseminating these incredible teachings and path was Paramahansa Yogananda, author of the spiritual classic ‘Autobiography of a Yogi’.
In the classic text of the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali 2.1 describes Kriya Yoga as “Tapas, Svadhyaya, Isvara Pranidhana” that is: Kriya Yoga is discipline, austerity (tapas), study of the Self - meditative introspection and study of classical scriptures as well as the words of enlightened Masters (Svadhyaya) and surrender and devotion to the Divine Self - the Lord of the Universe - the Eternal Father of which we are all part (Isvara Pranidhana).
The first meditation that is taught in Kriya Yoga is Hong-So meditation. After some preparation in this meditation, in the technique where we hear the inner sound of “OM” and a feeling of connection with the Masters of Kriya yoga, meditators can ask for initiation into this spiritual path.
What does Yogananda say about Kriya?
“By freeing the breath from the body’s bondage of death, Kriya Yoga gives the soul freedom of everlasting life. Yoga shows how to unite the breath with the soul. The method overcomes the tug of war between the mind and the matter-bound senses, and frees the devotee to reinherit his eternal kingdom.” - Paramahansa Yogananda
“The purpose of Kriya Yoga is scientific self-realization, that is, union with God through Self-realization. The practice of Kriya Yoga Pranayama teaches man how to dissolve the breath-cord that binds the soul to the body so that he may fly free from his cage of flesh into the realms of Spirit.” - Paramhansa Yogananda
Excerpt from Autobiography of a Yogi
Kriya Yoga is an advanced technique that accelerates man’s spiritual evolution and leads him to realize a union with God or Self-Realization. It is not possible to trace the history of the ancient science of Kriya Yoga to a historical epoch or a single master. It is one of those teachings that have always belonged to humanity. The knowledge of Kriya remained buried during the dark age of materialism. It was brought back to life in modern times by the immortal guru Babaji, and later brought to the West in the early 20th century by Paramhansa Yogananda. “The Kriya Yoga which through you I am about to give to the world during this nineteenth century,” said Babaji to Lahiri Mahasaya “is the same science, reborn, which Krishna gave millenniums ago to Arjuna; and which was later known to Patanjali and Christ, St. John, St. Paul, and other disciples.”
The technique of Kriya Yoga is a simple psychophysiological method through which human blood is purified from carbon dioxide and recharged with oxygen. The atoms of this extra oxygen are transmuted into life current to rejuvenate the brain and spinal centers. By stopping the accumulation of venous blood, the yogi is able to lessen or prevent tissue decay; the advanced yogi transmutes his cells into pure energy. Through this technique, the practitioner’s spine becomes “magnetized” and the flow of energy reverses its course reorienting itself towards internal perception rather than external senses. Through this process, consciousness concentrates on the spinal column, energy increases, purifying our spirit and dissolving our karma. Elijah, Jesus, Kabir and other prophets of the past were masters in using Kriya or a similar technique through which they voluntarily dematerialized their bodies.
Half a minute of Kriya corresponds to a year of natural spiritual evolution. The Scriptures state that human beings need a million years of normal evolution, free from illness, to perfect their brain so that they can express Cosmic Consciousness and therefore the realization of God. A thousand Kriyas practiced in eight hours give the yogi in a single day the equivalent of a thousand years of natural evolution: 365 thousand years of evolution in one year. In three years, a Kriya Yogi can therefore achieve, with his own intelligent commitment, the same result that nature allows to be achieved over more than a million years. Practicing so many Kriyas can only be performed by deeply evolved yogis. The Kriya beginner performs his yoga exercise only fourteen to twenty-eight times, twice a day. The body of the average man is like a fifty-watt lamp, which cannot withstand the billions of watts of energy generated by excessive Kriya practice. Through gradual and regular increase in Kriya methods, simple and accessible to all, the human body is transformed at the astral level day after day and is finally suitable for expressing the infinite potentialities of cosmic energy. With progress in practice, the practitioner experiences an increasingly happy state until cosmic fusion with the absolute is achieved.
“Practice Kriya day and night is the greatest key to salvation; others depend on external practices; they will need entire incarnations to realize God. While others discuss trivial matters, you go to the garden and do some Kriya. What else do you need? Kriya will give you everything you are looking for.” Paramhansa Yogananda.
“The effects of Kriya bring with them the greatest peace and bliss. The joy that comes with Kriya (and superconscious meditation) is superior to the joys of all pleasant physical sensations put together.” Yogananda
“Not attracted to the sensory world, the yogi experiences the ever-new joy inherent in Being. Engaged in the Divine Union (Yoga) of Soul with Spirit, he attains indestructible bliss” (Bhagavad Gita V: 21).
“From that joy experienced in meditation, I receive the rest of a thousand sleeps. Sleep becomes practically useless for an advanced Kriya Yogi.” Yoganandaji
Jesus
Christ
"I see Him in my mind as He really was: the Eastern Christ. Many painters have tried to give Him blue eyes and blond hair, but He was a true Oriental…by birth, blood, and education. The Magi of the East, who came from far-off India, were there to honor Him when He was born, for they knew that He was one of the greatest messengers who had come to bring Truth.
The supreme message of Jesus Christ is alive and prospering in both East and West. The West has concentrated on refining the physical man, while the East has developed the spiritual man.
East and West are both one-sided.
It is not strange to observe that perhaps because of a secret plan of God, the East, which needs material development, has been invaded by Western material civilization.
In turn, the West, which needs spiritual balance, has been quietly but definitely invaded by Hindu philosophy!" - Paramahansa Yogananda, The Eastern Christ.
“But seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” Matthew 6.24-34
Your name and date of birth are unknown. Babaji means "Revered Father," and His influence is felt worldwide because He brought back the ancient science of Kriya Yoga to the world.
Yogananda said that Kriya Yoga had been lost due to "the secrecy of the priests and the indifference of men," and it was Babaji who sent Yogananda to the West, to our good fortune!
Yogananda said that Babaji was a reincarnation of Krishna, and therefore, He was often also called "Babaji-Krishna."
In his autobiography, Yogananda wrote that it was Jesus Christ who asked Babaji to send a realized master to the West, saying, "They are doing a good work in the West, but they deny the essence of my teachings, that is, communion with God in deep meditation."
Yogananda was that master, and he said that one of the important aspects of his mission in the West was to unite Eastern and Western traditions, representing the original Christian teachings along with the original teachings of yoga as taught by Krishna.
He says, "Love is the undisturbed balance that holds this Universe together."
Mahavatar
Babaji
Lahiri Mahasaya (1828-1895)
Lahiri was His name, and His disciples added "Mahasaya," which means "Great Sage."
He asked Babaji if the science of Kriya Yoga could be made available to all sincere souls seeking God, not just those who withdrew from the world. Babaji consented, and thus, the revolution of Modern Kriya Yoga took place, previously only accessible to those who renounced worldly responsibilities.
He was not a Swami but a family man with two children, and He also worked.
His life is a wonderful example of someone who lives in the world but is not of the world, that is, like a JIVAMUKTI - with total dedication to higher spiritual ideals, even in the daily activities of modern life.
He is a direct disciple of Babaji.
He says, "The Guru is in Kutashta (the Christic, spiritual eye, between the eyebrows)."
Sri Yukteswar lived in India and belonged to the ancient monastic order of swamis.
Before becoming a Swami, He lived as a family man until his wife passed away.
Yogananda made the same monastic request and called his Master "Gyanavatar," which means "the incarnation of Divine wisdom."
He wrote a small but immensely valuable book called "The Holy Science," requested by the great Yogi Mahavatar Babaji.
Yukteswar was a direct disciple of Lahiri Mahasaya.
"Everything in the future will improve if you make a spiritual effort now." - Yukteswar
Swami Sri Yukteswar (1855-1936)
Paramahansa Yogananda (1893-1952)
Yogananda lived in the United States from the 1920s and consciously left his body (an act known as "mahasamadhi") in 1952.
He traveled throughout the United States of America, teaching the essence of spirituality: to have direct experience of God or deeper and truer self-realization.
His mission was to share with sincere people the search of the soul, providing powerful tools for this purpose, especially through the practice of Kriya Yoga meditation.
He emphasized the practical solutions offered by yoga for all the changes and challenges of modern life. You can better understand his story in his classic book, "Autobiography of a Yogi."
His Guru, "Swami Sri Yukteswar," as well as "Mahavatar Babaji," guided Him in this important mission in the West.
He is known as a "Premavatar" or the incarnation of Divine Love.
Yogananda says, "You must not let your life run in an ordinary way; do something that no one has ever done, something that will dazzle the world. Show that the Creative Principle of God works through you."
Roy Eugene Davis is a master of Kriya Yoga, a direct disciple of Yogananda, and a highly spiritually realized soul.
Known for his straightforward manner or as a "gyan yogi" (a yogi of wisdom, discernment, and study).
When he blessed me, I felt the love and purity of his heart and recognized him as a direct channel of Master Yogananda and all the Kriya masters.
Davis authorized me to prepare and initiate new devotees of Truth in Kriya Yoga since 2014. I am officially his minister and represent him and the masters of Kriya Yoga since 2016.
He describes himself as follows: "In outward appearance and in the way I am, I am a partially conservative American man. Inwardly, I am a yogi who is completing a mission and representing a tradition with roots in the distant past. I cannot fully explain to others what I know about myself and the role I am playing." - Roy Eugene Davis - Get to know him better:
